Manchester City has confirmed the arrival of midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest on a five-year deal, with the player expressing his determination to make the move happen. The contract for the 23-year-old is set to run until June 2031.
The transfer fee for Anderson was agreed upon during his time playing for England at the World Cup. Initially, this deal was poised to be the most expensive for a British player in history, but it was later surpassed by Morgan Rogers‘ £117m transfer from Aston Villa to Chelsea.
Anderson’s Journey to Manchester City
Anderson stated that he had no hesitation when presented with the opportunity to join what he described as “one of the biggest clubs in the world.” He added that as soon as he knew City wanted him, he was determined to ensure the move took place. His ambition is to test himself at the highest level, and he believes joining City provides that chance.
After a break following the World Cup, Anderson plans to dedicate himself to establishing his place within the City team. He highlighted City’s winning mentality, describing them as “relentless” and champions who consistently win trophies, which aligns with the type of team he desires to be a part of. He noted City’s dominance over the past 10 to 12 years as a key reason for his decision.
Hugo Viana, City’s director of football, praised Anderson as “one of the outstanding young midfield talents in the world.” Viana highlighted Anderson’s energy, exceptional work rate, and passing range, noting his impressive improvement in recent years. He believes that at 23, Anderson has significant potential for further development and can become a complete midfielder.
Anderson joined Forest from Newcastle United in 2024 for £35m. During his time at Forest, he became an integral player, contributing to the club’s seventh-place finish in the Premier League and their qualification for Europe for the first time in 30 years. Last season, he also helped Forest reach the Europa League semi-finals.
He was a key figure for England under Thomas Tuchel, featuring in every game during the World Cup. Anderson also led the Premier League last season in touches, with 3,300, and duels won, with 297, as well as winning possession 306 times.
Impact and Future Expectations
City’s agreement to pay a club-record fee for Anderson surpassed the £100m spent on Jack Grealish in 2021. The club reportedly fended off competition from Manchester United for his signature. Discussions regarding Anderson’s future were ongoing during the World Cup, with an agreement reached between Forest and City just before England’s Group L match against Panama.
Anderson will join a team now led by former Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca, who took over in June after Pep Guardiola stepped down as City manager following 10 years in charge. Anderson expressed his anticipation of working with Maresca, having heard positive feedback from Chelsea players and observed Maresca’s teams.
Anderson is currently taking a three-week break after his World Cup participation in North America. He is looking forward to playing for City and has identified the first Manchester derby of the new season on 13 September as a significant fixture. He referred to City as the “kings of Manchester” in an interview on the club’s website, suggesting he is prepared for the reception he might receive from the Old Trafford faithful.
The Tyneside-born player, who began his career at Newcastle, believes he has much more to achieve. He stated that at 23, he has ample time to reach his peak performance levels. Anderson also mentioned that Kevin De Bruyne, who left City two summers ago, is an idol of his, and he has always aspired to play like him.
Anderson spent half a season on loan at Bristol Rovers in 2022, where he earned the nickname “Geordie Maradona” among supporters, a moniker he says brings him confidence.
The deal was agreed three weeks ago and was finalised this week after Anderson’s return from the World Cup.
