Leeds United have announced the signing of goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City in a club-record deal. The transfer is valued at an initial £40m, with potential add-ons, making it the most expensive acquisition in Leeds’ history. This fee surpasses the £35.5m previously paid for Georginio Rutter in January 2023.
Trafford has committed to a five-year contract at Elland Road. He becomes the third permanent signing for Leeds this summer, following the arrivals of Harry Wilson and Tarik Muharemovic. The 23-year-old was identified as Leeds’ primary goalkeeping target for the summer transfer window, with hopes he will provide stability in a position that has presented challenges for the club.
Record-breaking transfer for a British goalkeeper
The move for Trafford establishes him as the most expensive British goalkeeper in history. Additionally, the deal places him as the fourth-most expensive goalkeeper globally. He is positioned behind Kepa Arrizabalaga, who transferred to Chelsea for £72m, Alisson, who joined Liverpool for £67m, and Andre Onana, who moved to Manchester United for £47.2m.
Trafford’s arrival pushes Leeds’ total spending in the current transfer window to over £70m. This signing is anticipated to facilitate the loan departure of goalkeeper Lucas Perri to Torino, with an option for a permanent transfer. Leeds are reportedly prepared to sanction Perri’s exit, as they now have sufficient goalkeeping options.
Torino is awaiting Perri’s recovery from a minor injury, which caused him to miss their last two pre-season matches, before finalising his move. There is also an expectation that Leeds will seek to bring in another goalkeeper to serve as a backup to Trafford.
Trafford’s journey and aspirations
Before his transfer was officially announced, Trafford shared a message on social media expressing his sentiments towards Manchester City. He stated that playing for City’s first team was a dream he held since moving away from home at the age of 12, and he was proud to have achieved that last season, winning two trophies in the process. He also mentioned the fans singing his name at the Etihad as a childhood dream.
Trafford had rejoined Manchester City last summer after progressing through their youth system. He played as the cup goalkeeper, contributing to the team’s victories in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. However, he has sought first-team football, with Gianluigi Donnarumma being the preferred choice at City.
During his time at Burnley, Trafford excelled, particularly when the club competed against Daniel Farke‘s side for promotion. He recalled competing closely against Leeds two seasons ago, describing them as a very strong team and Elland Road as a tough venue for visiting teams. He also noted Leeds’ performance at the Etihad last season, highlighting their energy, physicality, and directness.
Trafford, who has earned two caps for England and was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of this summer’s FIFA World Cup, expressed his excitement about joining Leeds. He told LUTV that he is confident in his abilities and aims to play as hard as he can while enjoying the experience. He described Leeds as an amazing club, full of energy and passion from both the club and its supporters, which he believes contributes significantly to team performance and results.
He believes the club is on a positive trajectory since the manager’s arrival, noting their recent promotion to the top-flight. Trafford hopes his experiences, including his starring role in two domestic cup finals with Pep Guardiola‘s City, will translate into meaningful progress at Leeds. He views Elland Road as the ideal place to advance his ambition of becoming his country’s number one goalkeeper in the future. Trafford’s family traveled from Cumbria to be with him as he completed his record transfer.
Former Leeds goalkeeper Nigel Martyn, who also set a British record fee for a goalkeeper when he joined Leeds in 1996, met Trafford at Elland Road. Martyn made 273 appearances for the club during his career.
