Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Cristian Orozco, an 18-year-old defensive midfielder from Colombia. Orozco, who has been described as one of South American football’s highly-coveted teenagers, joins the club after a deal was struck last September. Due to FIFA regulations, the move to England could not be completed until Orozco turned 18 on July 13.
Orozco has continued to play for Fortaleza FC in Colombia’s top-flight until his recent move. The club stated that they have completed the signing of the “exciting young midfielder.” He is expected to primarily feature for United’s youth sides as he adapts to his new environment.
Orozco’s Development and Potential
While Orozco is not expected to be an immediate contributor to the first team, there is belief in his potential. He made his professional debut in February and has shown leadership qualities, having worn the armband for various Colombian Youth national team age groups. His leadership traits were noted by managers at Colombian development side Rojo, where he played before joining Fortaleza.
Beyond leadership, Orozco’s passing, strength in duels, and tactical intelligence have been highlighted. He is seen as a raw talent who needs to develop physically to handle the intensity of the Premier League. Orozco made his public United debut for the U21 side, featuring from the bench in a pre-season friendly against Altrincham FC.
Before his official unveiling, Orozco visited Old Trafford last fall to watch the Red Devils play. He expressed his excitement about joining the club, stating that seeing the stadium and training ground was a childhood dream. Orozco mentioned his intention to learn English quickly and adapt to his new surroundings, believing his qualities in strength and technique can be key.
Settling into Carrington
Orozco’s transfer from Fortaleza CEIF was finalised after his 18th birthday last month. He made his debut against Altrincham, showing signs of quality during his appearance from the bench. He appears to be more physically developed than some of United’s previous academy signings of a similar profile, such as Sekou Kone and Diego Leon.
Despite his physical maturity, United sources have indicated they will take a gradual approach with Orozco as he adapts. He currently does not speak English, and Spanish-speaking players, including Leon, have been assisting with communication. Reports suggest the deal for Orozco is worth around £750,000.
Orozco is reportedly the second Colombian player to join United, following Radamel Falcao. He suggested he has signed a five-year deal with the club. The U21s are preparing for their upcoming campaign, having played a recent behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley, which they won 4-0.
The U21s are also scheduled to play behind-closed-doors friendlies against Aston Villa and Ipswich to build fitness before the start of competitive action. United are set to begin their league campaign against Ipswich, making the friendly particularly useful.
In other academy news, Jim Thwaites, a midfielder admired by Michael Carrick, is set to remain with the U21s and receive first-team exposure through training. There are no plans for him to go out on loan this season. Additionally, Jacob Devaney, a defensive midfielder, is attracting interest from Championship clubs and teams in Europe following a loan spell with St Mirren. Everton are also reportedly interested in signing United academy striker Ethan Wheatley.
