Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa for the transfer of midfielder Morgan Rogers in a deal valued at £117m. This move is set to establish a new transfer record for an English player, surpassing the £116m fee that Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer. Rogers is also poised to become Chelsea’s most expensive signing, exceeding the £107m spent on Enzo Fernandez in 2023, and the £115m paid for Moises Caicedo in the same year, according to different reports.

The 23-year-old is expected to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for an additional year. He is scheduled to undergo a medical examination on Monday, following his return from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup. Rogers featured in seven games during the tournament and provided an assist in England’s semi-final defeat.

Aston Villa acquired Rogers from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial £8m, a fee that could rise to £15m. Due to a clause in the transfer agreement, Middlesbrough is set to receive at least £20.4m from the sale to Chelsea, depending on triggered add-ons. One report indicates Middlesbrough could make £20.3m from the sell-on clause, bringing their total earnings from Rogers to £35.8m, with £34.7m in profit.

Impact on Chelsea and Aston Villa

The acquisition of Morgan Rogers comes as new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso works to shape his squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League season. This transfer signals Chelsea’s continued ambition despite finishing 10th in the Premier League last season and missing out on European football. It also suggests that Stamford Bridge remains an attractive destination for top talents in the league.

Rogers was reportedly a primary target for Arsenal, who were unwilling to match Chelsea’s offer. His move to Chelsea means he will forgo Champions League football next season, which he would have had with Aston Villa or potentially Arsenal.

Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Aston Villa and was part of the team that secured the Europa League title last season. He also contributed 14 goals and 11 assists in 55 appearances for Villa last season, according to another report. He has earned 22 senior England appearances, scoring once, with 21 caps to his name according to one source.

The arrival of Rogers raises questions about how he will integrate into the Chelsea squad, particularly concerning his impact on star attacker Cole Palmer. Both players progressed through Manchester City’s academy together and are described as best friends. They are both capable of operating in various attacking positions and will compete for playing time with other forwards, including Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, and Geovany Quenda. Alejandro Garnacho is being sold to make room in the squad.

For Aston Villa, Rogers’ departure follows Youri Tielemans’ £35m move to Manchester United. Despite these exits, Villa have brought in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a deal worth over £50m and have reportedly lined up Wolves’ Joao Gomes for £38m.

Rogers is the seventh former Manchester City youth player to sign for Chelsea since the new takeover, with the total spend on these players amounting to £296.5m. This includes Jamie Gittens (£51.5m), Liam Delap (£30m), Tosin Adarabioyo (free), Romeo Lavia (£58m), and Cole Palmer (£40m), among others. Jadon Sancho also joined on loan.

Rogers currently wears No. 27 for Aston Villa. At Chelsea, senior numbers are occupied. Available numbers include 16, 17, 18, 22, and 26. The No. 16 was vacated by Lesley Ugochukwu, and the No. 17 became available after Andrey Santos’ £48m move to Manchester United.

The No. 18 was last worn by Christopher Nkunku, while the No. 22 was previously worn by players like Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Hakim Ziyech, and Willian. The No. 26, historically associated with John Terry, has been worn by central defenders such as Levi Colwill and Kalidou Koulibaly.
