Villa strengthens squad with Garnacho loan
Aston Villa have confirmed the season-long loan signing of winger Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea. This move marks a continuation of significant activity at Villa Park this summer. The agreement for Garnacho’s loan includes a conditional obligation for Villa to purchase the player.
Garnacho originally joined Chelsea last August from Manchester United in a deal reportedly worth £40m. Villa is anticipated to pay a similar fee for the player. Garnacho featured in games across all competitions for Chelsea, scoring eight goals, but reportedly did not make a strong impression at Stamford Bridge.
The decision for Garnacho to depart Chelsea came after he was informed he would not be guaranteed regular playing time under the club’s new manager, Xabi Alonso. Garnacho did not report for pre-season duty with Chelsea, as had been pre-arranged, and remained away from the training ground while his departure was being finalised.
Unai Emery, Villa’s manager, expressed satisfaction with the acquisition, stating, “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy.” Garnacho was included in Argentina’s initial 55-man selection but did not participate in this summer’s World Cup.
Ongoing transfer activity between clubs
Garnacho’s arrival is Villa’s third signing of the summer, following the additions of Johan Manzambi and João Gomes. This transfer continues a pattern of deals between Villa and Chelsea. Earlier this week, a £117m deal saw Morgan Rogers move to Stamford Bridge.
Previous transfers between the two clubs include the sale of Carney Chukwuemeka to Chelsea in 2022 and Ian Maatsen heading to Villa in 2024. Another player with Chelsea connections, Jadon Sancho, spent last season on loan at Villa from Manchester United, but despite becoming a free agent, he was not signed by Villa.
In other transfer news, Youri Tielemans departed Villa for Manchester United this month after his £35m release clause was activated. This comes as the Europa League champions are rebuilding to operate as a Champions League club, despite facing Uefa sanctions.
Earlier this summer, Villa received a partially suspended £19.4m fine from Uefa for a “significant breach” of squad-cost rules for 2025. A sum of £12.9m is suspended, contingent on the club significantly reducing its squad-cost ratio in 2026. This sanction also restricts the registration of new players on Villa’s squad list for the upcoming Champions League season.
Jackson’s potential move to Villa Park
Separately, there is reported interest from Villa in Chelsea’s Jackson, with whom Emery previously worked at La Liga side Villarreal. While no club-to-club talks have been confirmed, Jackson is said to be open to a move to Villa Park in pursuit of more regular playing time.
Jackson has scored 30 goals in 81 appearances for Chelsea since joining from Villarreal for £32m in 2023. However, he was reportedly considered surplus to requirements last season following the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. Joao Pedro is expected to remain Chelsea’s primary option up front this season, having scored 20 goals in all competitions last term.
Xabi Alonso has indicated his intent to assess Jackson during pre-season, after Bayern opted not to activate the £56million permanent purchase option in his loan agreement. The relationship between Villa and Chelsea is reportedly positive, following their recent negotiations for Rogers.
