France’s World Cup Exit
France captain Kylian Mbappe has expressed his frustration following the team’s elimination from the World Cup semi-finals, attributing the 0-2 defeat to Spain in Dallas to tactical and technical shortcomings. Mbappe, who was aiming for a third consecutive World Cup final appearance, stated that the team did not perform as intended, either tactically, technically, or in their overall performance level. He emphasised that failing to execute the required game plan in a World Cup semi-final inevitably leads to defeat.
The Real Madrid star highlighted the team’s objective to press Spain high up the pitch to disrupt their controlled rhythm, acknowledging that Spain excels at controlling the game. Mbappe admitted that France failed to achieve this crucial objective. The match took place at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, where Spain ultimately outplayed Les Bleus.
Mbappe had been a prominent figure throughout the tournament, scoring eight goals during France‘s journey to the last four. However, his aspirations for another World Cup final were cut short by the defeat.
Midfield Struggles and Disappointment
The core issue, according to Mbappe, lay in the midfield, where France‘s duo of Adrien Rabiot and Aurelien Tchouameni were frequently outnumbered by Spain‘s trio of Rodri, Dani Olmo, and Fabian Ruiz. Mbappe noted that being consistently at a numerical disadvantage of three-on-two in midfield against a team like Spain presents a significant problem, ultimately leading to the defeat. He described the outcome as an immense disappointment, finding it difficult to articulate the squad’s feelings.
Despite the setback, Mbappe stated that the squad is determined to recover and learn from the loss. He believes that just as one wins with their head held high, one must also lose with their head held high. He acknowledged the need for the team to move past this failure, learn from it, and prepare for future challenges, as football continues without pause.

Deschamps Questions Refereeing
France coach Didier Deschamps also voiced concerns regarding the officiating of the semi-final match. He questioned FIFA‘s decision to appoint Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton for the crucial game. Deschamps conceded that France was technically a step below Spain, attributing the loss primarily to his team’s own faults. However, he suggested that Barton might not have been adequately prepared to officiate a World Cup semi-final.
The defeat saw Mikel Oyarzabal score from a penalty and Pedro Porro add a second-half goal for Spain. France was particularly unhappy with the penalty decision, which was awarded after Lucas Digne made contact with Lamine Yamal. Deschamps refrained from dwelling on the refereeing too much, stating he did not want to sound like he was complaining, but he invited others to consider the standard of officiating. He mentioned that there had been several situations, often unfavourable to France, throughout the tournament.
Deschamps reiterated that while refereeing decisions were a factor, the main reason for the loss was France‘s own underperformance and lack of offensive threat. He noted that the team made technical errors and missed passes that could have created scoring opportunities. He accepted the result, acknowledging that Spain demonstrated something extra in the match. France will now play in the third-place match.

Differing Views on Officiating
Spain captain Rodri also expressed dissatisfaction with Barton‘s performance, believing that Lamine Yamal should have received more protection from fouls. Rodri claimed that there were numerous uncalled fouls throughout the game, suggesting that a permissive approach from the referee encourages defensive players to continue similar actions. He noted that this type of situation had occurred in previous matches as well.
Conversely, Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente acknowledged that both teams might have experienced issues with lenient refereeing during the tournament. When asked about Deschamps‘ comments, De la Fuente suggested that excuses can always be found when things do not go as desired. He recalled instances where his own team faced difficult refereeing situations, comparing it to a previous match against Uruguay, and felt that the referee’s leniency played a role. He stressed the importance of preventing games from getting out of hand. De la Fuente concluded by stating that he is not currently focused on the refereeing but hopes for continuous improvement from all involved in football, including referees and VAR.
