England manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed his intention to remain in his role until Euro 2028, despite the team’s recent semi-final defeat to Argentina in the World Cup. The decision comes after England lost 2-1 in Atlanta, with Argentina staging a late comeback by scoring two goals within seven minutes.
Tuchel, who was appointed head coach in January 2025, had extended his initial contract earlier this year to run through to Euro 2028. The tournament is set to be co-hosted by England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland.
When asked directly about his future following the World Cup exit, Tuchel stated, “We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros. I’m looking forward to that even though right now it’s difficult to look that far ahead.”
Tactical Decisions Under Scrutiny
The semi-final loss has led to significant discussion regarding Tuchel’s tactical approach, particularly after England took a 1-0 lead through Anthony Gordon. Harry Kane, England captain, expressed his disappointment, noting that the team seemed to try and hold onto the lead, which he felt was insufficient at that level. Kane indicated that while the message from Tuchel and his staff was to continue pushing for another goal, the team increasingly retreated, inviting pressure from Argentina.
The match saw Chelsea‘s Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez score late goals for Argentina, overturning England‘s advantage. Tuchel’s substitutions during the game, including replacing Anthony Gordon with Ezri Konsa and shifting to a more defensive formation, have been criticised by some observers. This tactical change, which effectively saw England playing with an increased number of defenders, occurred with approximately 30 minutes remaining in the match.
Some commentators have drawn parallels between this approach and previous instances where England teams under different managers were accused of tactical caution. Tuchel himself had previously spoken about England‘s past tendency to fall short due to a fear of winning and attacking. During the period between England‘s goal and Argentina‘s winner, England reportedly had 12 per cent of the ball and recorded 0.07 xG over 37 minutes.
This semi-final appearance marks England‘s second in eight years, a fact Tuchel acknowledged as an achievement, despite the immediate disappointment. He noted that many prominent footballing nations are eliminated before reaching the semi-final stage.
Looking Ahead to the Third-Place Play-off
England will now remain in the US to prepare for a third-place play-off match against France in Miami on Saturday. Tuchel admitted that neither his players nor the France players would prefer to be in this match, as both teams had aimed for the final. He emphasised the professional approach the team would take, despite having one less day than France to recover.
Tuchel highlighted the importance of the team’s ability to “bounce back and react” at the highest level of sport. Harry Kane also reflected on the tournament, stating that the team had many good moments and another semi-final appearance, suggesting they are close to finding the “missing piece” needed for success.
The World Cup campaign for England has been characterised by a degree of defensive fluidity, with the team utilising three different centre-back pairings, two different starting left-backs, and four different players at right-back, resulting in six different starting back fours throughout the tournament.
Despite the recent setback, Tuchel’s commitment to lead England into Euro 2028 remains firm.
