Morgan Rogers has officially joined Chelsea from Aston Villa, signing a seven-year deal. The transfer, agreed on Saturday, sees the England international move to Stamford Bridge. This acquisition is reported to be a significant one for Chelsea, with the club having secured his signature ahead of Arsenal, who were also in discussions to sign him.

A key factor in Rogers’ decision was the opportunity to work under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso. Rogers expressed excitement about the project at Chelsea, highlighting the new manager, the existing players, and the club’s direction. He described Chelsea as the biggest club in London, a team he has admired since childhood.

Rogers’ move follows his participation in the World Cup, where he helped England secure a third-place finish. He started in the semi-final defeat to Argentina in Atlanta and the subsequent win over France that earned the bronze medal. The attacking midfielder has known fellow Chelsea player Cole Palmer for a decade, and the prospect of playing together at senior domestic level for the same team is a thrilling one for both.

A new chapter at Chelsea

The versatile forward is expected to fulfil Chelsea’s need for a player capable of performing multiple attacking roles. His career has seen a rapid ascent since his move to Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024. During his time at Villa Park, he contributed to Villa’s top-four finish and qualification for the Europa League last season. He departs Villa having scored 31 times in 125 appearances under Unai Emery.

This transfer represents one of the most notable purchases under Chelsea owners BlueCo’s four-year tenure. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali had previously indicated the club’s intention to target players who could help them contend for titles, following an underwhelming campaign where the team finished 10th and faced a defeat in the Champions League last 16. The appointment of Xabi Alonso, a former Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich midfielder with two Champions League titles as a player, was partly aimed at attracting high-calibre players to Chelsea.

Rogers’ transfer is considered one of the most significant deals for the club since Cole Palmer’s move from Manchester City in 2023. He is the fourth signing of the summer for Chelsea, joining defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha, and winger Geovany Quenda as the club overhauls its squad. In June, the club’s attempt to reunite Alonso with Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka was unsuccessful, as Chelsea was unwilling to meet the valuation for the player.

Family and personal growth

Rogers attributes much of his success and current position to the unwavering support of his family. He shared that his family provided him with the platform to play football and express himself, taking him to every game and supporting him throughout his journey. He emphasized that their presence at the training ground means everything to him, as he would not be where he is without them.

His family encouraged him to remain free and happy, believing that this would allow him to be his best self, regardless of his career path. Rogers reflected on the challenges he has faced, including unsuccessful loan spells, periods of not playing, and adapting to living away from home. He described his loans from Manchester City to Lincoln, Bournemouth, and Blackpool as crucial for learning to manage adversity and using setbacks as motivation.

Improving his mentality was a significant aspect of his development, enabling him to adapt and adjust to various situations. His elder brother, Daniel, a therapist who has previously worked with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and Cobham, has also played a vital role in his personal growth. Daniel’s guidance has helped Morgan understand himself better, particularly as scrutiny on him has increased since his move to Aston Villa and his representation of England, including at this summer’s World Cup.

Rogers highlighted the importance of having such support, especially as players navigate the pressures of professional football. He believes that talking about challenges and maintaining a positive mindset is paramount. His footballing philosophy revolves around maintaining the joy and spirit he found in the game as a child, ensuring that the pressures of playing at the top level do not overshadow his love for football. Rogers will turn 24 on Sunday.
