Midfield Reinforcements Explored
Manchester United is exploring options in the free transfer market to bolster its squad, particularly in midfield. This comes as the club navigates the summer transfer window, which has seen some initial setbacks in securing targets.
The club had been looking to add another midfielder and had considered selling Manuel Ugarte, but an injury to the player has made this impossible. This situation creates a need for additional midfield depth, potentially through free agents.
One player who could be considered is Yves Bissouma, recently released by Tottenham Hotspur after a period affected by injuries. While his time in north London was challenging, Bissouma was previously on United’s radar during his tenure at Brighton. He is seen as a potential option to add experience to the midfield, though not as a direct replacement for Casemiro.
Another experienced midfielder available is Leon Goretzka. His World Cup campaign concluded recently, and he is now focusing on his club future. Goretzka was a regular for Bayern Munich last season and could offer valuable midfield experience. While he does not have prior Premier League experience and is not considered a long-term prospect, he could provide crucial Champions League experience to a relatively young squad.

Dani Ceballos, a former teammate of Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, is also a potential free transfer target. Ceballos faced a difficult end to his time in Madrid due to injuries. However, he could provide the central midfield experience United seeks and might be open to a squad player role if it means remaining with a Champions League club. Ceballos also has previous experience in the Premier League.
Attacking Options and Transfer Challenges
Beyond the midfield, United is also looking at options to strengthen their attack. Dusan Vlahovic, whose time at Juventus was impacted by unresolved contract negotiations and injuries, could be targeted. Despite his injury issues, Vlahovic scored four goals in his final four Serie A games last season. The striker is seen as a potential backup option for Benjamin Sesko, with both Barcelona and Chelsea having been linked with him.
The club’s transfer activity has faced some challenges this summer. While Ederson from Atalanta is expected to be a key signing, United has missed out on other targets. For instance, Manchester City secured Elliot Anderson, and Tottenham acquired Mateus Fernandes, a player who was reportedly on United’s radar after his relegation from the Premier League with West Ham.
Michael Carrick, now confirmed as the permanent manager, is aiming to shape the team. The club’s transfer strategy involves key figures such as director of football Jason Wilcox, director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, and director of negotiations Matt Hargreaves. Vivell, who previously worked at RB Leipzig and Chelsea, leads a recruitment department that increasingly relies on data. The club continues to pursue a deal for Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and is targeting a left-sided player, a reserve goalkeeper, and an additional striker.
Despite the focus on free transfers and other targets, the club’s ability to make further acquisitions could depend on player sales. United has not received any offer or indication of interest from Barcelona for Sesko and is not taking those links seriously at present.
The club’s transfer activity is expected to intensify as the summer progresses, with the first pre-season fixture on the horizon.
