Williams’ return to Centre Court

Serena Williams made her return to singles play at Wimbledon, facing Maya Joint in a match that saw the Australian emerge victorious in three sets. This marked Williams’ first singles appearance at the tournament in four years, following her last match at the All England Club 1,462 days prior. Her return was met with an enthusiastic reception from the crowd on Centre Court, where she has previously secured seven singles and six women’s doubles titles.

The match concluded with Joint winning 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-3. Williams, aged 44, demonstrated resilience by saving a match point and forcing a deciding set against her opponent, who is 24 years her junior. Despite the strong effort, Joint maintained her composure to secure her first-ever victory at Wimbledon.

After the match, Williams did not participate in a post-match news conference but released a statement. She expressed her enjoyment of being back at Wimbledon, noting the amazing atmosphere and her appreciation for the moment. Her competitive return to tennis began earlier in the month in women’s doubles, almost four years after she indicated she was stepping away from the sport.

Match dynamics and Joint’s performance

In the initial stages of the match, Williams appeared to struggle with the pace, particularly in baseline rallies, as Joint delivered effective down-the-line winners. However, Williams’ performance improved as the match progressed. She recovered from being a break down twice in the second set, leading to a tie-break. During this period, she saved a match point with a powerful forehand winner and a 120mph serve, extending the match to a third set.

Maya Joint, who was 20 years old at the time of the match, had been experiencing a challenging period on the WTA Tour, having lost 11 consecutive matches. Despite this, she delivered a strong performance against Williams. Joint expressed her disbelief and excitement in an on-court interview, stating she had been dreaming of such a moment since childhood.

Joint acknowledged the significance of playing against Williams on Centre Court, recognising her opponent’s legendary status and aura. She noted that the experience was surreal and that she had been up late the night before thinking about the match. Her victory marks a notable achievement in her career.

Williams’ motivation and future plans

Williams’ decision to return to competitive tennis was partly influenced by the prospect of her daughters watching her play. Her eight-year-old daughter Olympia and Adira, who is almost three, were present in her players’ box during the match, alongside her husband Alexis Ohanian and sister Venus Williams.

The Williams sisters are scheduled to compete together in the doubles tournament later in the week. They are set to face Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in their first-round match. The pair has a history of success at Wimbledon, having won six doubles titles together.

Her return to singles made her the second oldest player to compete in the women’s singles draw at Wimbledon. Williams has 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most in the Open Era, and 367 singles wins at majors. She has reached 33 Grand Slam singles finals and appeared in 82 major main draws. Since 1990, she has won 73 singles titles.

The tennis landscape has changed since Williams’ last singles match in 2022, with new players rising in the rankings. Despite the loss, Williams’ return generated considerable interest and provided a memorable moment for fans.
