The Tuapse oil refinery has been struck by Ukrainian drones for the fourth time on May 1, 2026. This attack reignited fires and caused significant environmental damage.
Ukrainian forces targeted the facility again, which processes about 12 million tons of oil annually. The previous three attacks resulted in the destruction of 24 storage tanks and damage to four others.
A state of emergency was declared in the municipal district following the third attack. Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry claimed to have extinguished the fires just days before this latest strike.
Explosions and active gunfire were reported during the May 1 attack. Local residents stated that at least 10 drones were downed by air defense units over Tuapse.
Key statistics from recent attacks:
- Four attacks on the Tuapse oil refinery in two weeks
- 24 storage tanks destroyed and four damaged from previous assaults
- 21 Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure recorded in April 2026
- Russia’s average refinery capacity reduced to 4.69 million barrels per day, its lowest since December 2009
The environmental fallout has rendered Tuapse unsafe for visitors due to airborne petroleum byproducts and oil spills. Photos and videos of the fourth attack surfaced on social media shortly after it occurred.
In response to escalating tensions, Putin proposed a temporary truce during the May 9 holiday. However, it remains uncertain whether this will lead to any meaningful ceasefire amid ongoing hostilities.
