South Africa defeated Scotland 42-28 in a Nations Championship match held in Pretoria. The encounter saw Scotland twice reduce significant point deficits, demonstrating resilience against the double world champions.
Despite their efforts, Scotland could not secure their first Test victory against the Springboks on South African soil. A crucial moment in the match was a missed opportunity for Scotland at the start of the second half when South Africa had a forward in the sin bin.
Scotland earned a bonus point from tries scored by Matt Fagerson, Kyle Rowe, Josh Bayliss, and Ben White. However, South Africa ultimately prevailed, attributed to their physical strength and, as acknowledged by Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu, more clinical execution.
Both teams had previously secured victories in the opening round of the Nations Championship. Scotland achieved a record-breaking win against Argentina in Cordoba, while South Africa defeated England at Ellis Park.
Team Changes and Early Exchanges
For this match, South Africa made 11 changes to their squad, while Scotland made three alterations. Finn Russell, Zander Fagerson, and Gregor Brown, all British & Irish Lions, were promoted to Scotland‘s starting line-up. A late change on the Scotland bench saw Max Williamson replace his injured club-mate Alex Samuel.
Scotland has played four Test matches at Loftus Versfeld, including three during the 1995 Rugby World Cup and one in the 2013 quadrangular tournament. This marked their first encounter with the Springboks at this venue in Pretoria.
Rory Sutherland, the Glasgow Warriors prop, earned his 50th cap when he entered the game from the bench and had the honour of leading both teams out onto the field.
Early in the match, South Africa‘s scrum-half Embrose Papier scored the first try, converted by Handre Pollard, putting South Africa ahead 7-0 after 16 minutes. Shortly after, Evan Roos added a second try for South Africa, also converted by Pollard, extending their lead to 14-0 after 19 minutes.
Scotland responded when Matt Fagerson scored his fifth try for his country, converted by Russell, bringing the score to 14-7 after 33 minutes. This was Scotland‘s first try against South Africa since 2021. As half-time approached, Kyle Rowe scored his eighth try for Scotland and his second in successive weeks, with Russell converting to level the scores at 14-14 at the interval.

Kyle Rowe asked many questions of the Springboks‘ defence, gaining 54 metres, including two clean breaks, beating five defenders, and scoring a first-half try.
Jack Dempsey proved effective with the ball, gaining 44 attacking metres and making a joint team-high of 15 tackle completions. Matt Fagerson competed fiercely at breakdowns, scored a try, and made 15 hits on defence. Scott Cummings impressed with his lineout work and as a ball carrier, gaining 30 metres.
