RAF personnel participated in Anzac Day commemorations early Tuesday in Harrogate, England. The event honored 97 Royal Australian Air Force and 23 Royal New Zealand Air Force servicemen.

At RAF Lakenheath, an F-15E Strike Eagle was painted to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Operation El Dorado Canyon. This operation was a military response to the bombing of the La Belle discotheque in West Berlin.

As of midday, RAF troops reported intercepting over 100 Iranian drones and missiles at a coalition base in the Middle East. During six weeks of conflict, they shot down more than 100 drones.

The coalition base faced daily attacks, with 28 drones and missiles linked to Iran targeting it. The Ministry of Defence is discussing expanding the UK’s counter-drone capability.

Wing Commander David Buckingham stated, “It was an honour to represent Royal Air Force Leeming at the Anzac Day Ceremony.” His remarks highlight the significance of these commemorations.

Al Carns acknowledged the RAF’s efforts, saying, “The base would probably be a smouldering wreck if it wasn’t for you guys.” This reflects the critical role RAF operations play in modern conflicts.

Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth confirmed discussions on enhancing drone interception capabilities are ongoing. The focus remains on adapting to evolving threats from groups like the Islamic State and state actors like Iran.

Anzac Day commemorates the anniversary of Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought during World War I. This year’s ceremonies underscore the enduring recognition of military sacrifices.
