Aldi is set to enhance the sweetness of its blackberries through dedicated breeding efforts, aiming to significantly boost sales this season. Starting on May 21, 2026, all fresh blackberries in Aldi stores will be 100% British-grown.
Last year, Aldi sold over 228 tonnes of blackberries, equivalent to 1.5 million punnets. With the new varieties, the supermarket expects blackberry sales to grow by up to 20% this season.
Aldi’s focus on improving sweetness stems from its collaboration with Driscoll’s. The companies are working together to select only the finest blackberry varieties.
The blackberries undergo taste-testing throughout the season and are picked at peak ripeness. This ensures customers receive high-quality homegrown fruit.
Experts highlight that exceptional flavour is a result of years of dedicated natural breeding. “We expect our blackberries to taste better than ever this season,” said Julie Ashfield from Aldi.
Aldi aims to secure at least 50% of its domestic produce through long-term partnerships by the end of 2027. This strategic move reflects Aldi’s commitment to supporting UK horticulture.
British blackberries will start appearing in selected stores from early May 2026. This initiative aligns with growing consumer demand for seasonal produce and locally sourced items.
