Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo and his partner, Noa van der Bij, have shared the sad news that they have lost their baby boy during pregnancy. The announcement was made by Van der Bij on Saturday, revealing that their son, named Elijah Raphael Gakpo, passed away.
Gakpo is currently with the Netherlands national squad at the World Cup. Earlier this year, in late May, the couple had announced they were expecting their second child. Van der Bij has been present at the tournament, supporting Gakpo from the stands, including for the Netherlands‘ opening match against Japan, which concluded in a 2-2 draw.
Family’s Heartbreaking Announcement
In an emotional post on social media, Van der Bij conveyed the devastating news. She wrote, "With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy. Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son."
She further shared a poignant experience, stating, "We went to church to light a candle. Afterward, we walked to the church playground with our son Samuel. There was only one other child there. His name was Elijah. There could not have been a more beautiful sign from God. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away." This message was accompanied by a photo of a candle and a cross.
Gakpo also made a statement regarding the family’s loss, asking for privacy during this incredibly difficult time. He posted, "This is an incredibly difficult time for our family. We kindly ask for our privacy and space. Thank you for your understanding."
The couple had been expecting their second child to arrive in October. Van der Bij’s social media post included a picture of the pair holding hands over a blanket and a knitted hat, symbolising their shared grief.
Gakpo’s World Cup Involvement
Despite the personal tragedy, Cody Gakpo has remained with the Netherlands squad at the World Cup. The Dutch football association confirmed that Gakpo, in consultation with his girlfriend, made the decision to stay with the team. The association expressed its sympathy for Gakpo and his family, acknowledging the sad private situation and stating their commitment to supporting the family where possible.
They also indicated that they would respect the family’s privacy and would not comment further on the situation, nor would they provide additional information in the near future, leaving any further disclosures to the family themselves.
The 27-year-old forward has played a crucial role for Ronald Koeman’s side in the tournament. He started all three of the Netherlands’ group games, contributing significantly to their progression to the knockout stages as Group F winners. His contributions included scoring two goals and providing an assist in their 5-1 victory over Sweden.
More recently, Gakpo played for the Netherlands in their 3-1 win against Tunisia on Thursday, a result that secured their top position in Group F. He is expected to retain his place in the starting lineup for the team’s upcoming round of 32 match against Morocco, scheduled for Tuesday in Mexico.

The news of the miscarriage comes after Van der Bij was seen supporting Gakpo during the Netherlands‘ World Cup opener against Japan two weeks ago.
