Doping Case Resolution
Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk is now free to return to competitive football after his doping case with the Football Association (FA) was resolved. The 25-year-old Ukraine international had been provisionally suspended since November 2024, following an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium. This resolution means he can immediately rejoin his club.
Initially, the FA had imposed a four-year ban on Mudryk. However, he appealed this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas). The FA confirmed that the anti-doping disciplinary proceedings have concluded, with Mudryk accepting that he committed Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) and agreeing to a period of ineligibility equivalent to the time he has already served. This agreement was reached with the consent of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Mudryk expressed his gratitude for being able to return to playing, describing the period as the “most difficult” of his career. He reiterated his consistent stance that he had never knowingly or intentionally taken any banned substance. Chelsea also stated their pleasure that the matter has concluded, allowing him to return to football immediately.
Details of the Case and WADA Changes
The FA had not previously disclosed specific details of the case due to the confidential nature of their anti-doping programme. However, their recent statement confirmed that Mudryk’s adverse finding for meldonium occurred during an out-of-competition test while on international duty with Ukraine in October 2024. The test revealed a low concentration of the prohibited cardiovascular medication, which is known to increase respiratory capacity and stamina.
Crucially, changes have since been made to the WADA Technical Document (TD2027MRL) regarding meldonium. While these changes are not retroactive, the FA noted that if Mudryk’s sample had been collected today, the concentration of meldonium would not have been reported, and no adverse finding would have been recorded. This development, along with other circumstances of the case, contributed to the resolution of the appeal proceedings.
Mudryk was notified of the adverse finding on 4 December 2024 and provisionally suspended. The FA subsequently charged him with ADRVs on 23 May 2025. An independent Regulatory Commission hearing took place from 7 to 9 January 2026, which found him to have committed the ADRVs and imposed the four-year period of ineligibility. His appeal to Cas was filed in April 2026.
Return to Chelsea and Future Prospects
Chelsea has indicated that their focus is now on supporting Mudryk’s reintegration into the squad. The club looks forward to helping him return to full fitness and getting him back onto the pitch. He is expected to join the club’s pre-season tour, which is currently taking place in Australia and south-east Asia. Throughout his suspension, Mudryk maintained his training regimen, working alone with a private coaching staff and sharing footage of his drills.
Mudryk remains under contract with Chelsea until 2031, having signed a long-term deal when he joined from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2022 for a reported £61m. This long contract was part of the club’s strategy to amortise the cost of transfers and contracts over many years. Had the four-year ban remained in place, he would not have been eligible to play again until approximately December 2028.
The club expressed its commitment to the highest standards of sporting integrity and compliance with anti-doping regulations. Mudryk, for his part, conveyed deep gratitude to everyone at Chelsea and expressed his eagerness for the “next chapter” of his career, focusing on hard work and making a positive contribution on the pitch. The agreement to resolve the proceedings was reached on 30 July 2026.
