Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Newcastle United full-back Lewis Hall. This interest comes during a period of significant change at the Tyneside club, which some believe could create an opportunity for United to secure the player.
Reports indicate that United are preparing an initial approach for Hall, with the timing of Eddie Howe’s departure from St James’ Park seen as a potential factor. While the focus for United this summer has largely been on strengthening the midfield, acquiring a new left-back remains a key objective, and Hall is understood to be their primary target.
Hall’s Background and Newcastle’s Situation
Hall, who has earned four England caps and secured a starting position at Newcastle before turning 21, is considered a promising young talent. He joined Newcastle in 2023, initially on loan from Chelsea, before making the move permanent in 2024. He has accumulated 102 appearances for the club, making him a valuable asset Newcastle would prefer to retain.
Despite his contributions, Hall’s 25/26 campaign was reportedly challenging, leading to his exclusion from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The recent upheaval at Newcastle, including Howe’s exit after five seasons, may influence the club’s transfer strategy.
Howe, who shares an agent with Hall, is expected to be replaced by Matthias Jaissle, currently managing Al Ahli. This managerial change is part of a broader transformation at Newcastle, which has already seen the sales of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, following the departure of Alexander Isak a year prior. There are also strong links between Arsenal and Bruno Guimaraes.
This period of squad turnover could lead Newcastle to either try and retain young players like Hall or embrace a strategy of selling players to generate funds for a team rebuild under the new manager.
United’s Pursuit and Alternative Targets
Jason Wilcox, United’s technical director, is reportedly a key figure driving the club’s interest in Hall. Wilcox is said to admire Hall’s versatility, noting his ability to perform as both a traditional full-back and an inverted defender.
United recognise that negotiations for Hall may not be straightforward, but they are reportedly prepared to make a significant effort to sign the £60m-rated England international before the transfer window closes. Hall is also understood to be receptive to a move to Old Trafford.
The need for a left-back at United is evident, as the club continues its search for a long-term replacement for Luke Shaw. Currently, Harry Amass is the only natural left-back behind Shaw in the squad, with Patrick Dorgu seemingly transitioning to a more advanced winger role. While Shaw had a healthy 25/26 campaign and continues to play at a high level, his speed and endurance, which were key to his role as an overlapping wing-back, are reportedly not the same.
Hall is seen as a player who could meet United’s requirements, provided the club is willing and able to finance the deal.
However, United are also exploring other options. Jorge Salinas, a 19-year-old Spanish talent from Racing Santander, has emerged as a leading alternative if a deal for Hall does not materialise. Salinas gained recognition this summer by playing a starring role for Spain in their victory at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Wales. He also contributed to Racing Santander’s promotion to LaLiga by winning the Segunda Division title last season.
United’s recruitment staff believe Salinas could immediately integrate into first-team football, leading to his rapid ascent on the club’s shortlist. However, competition for Salinas is strong, with Barcelona having already held talks for his signature. Negotiations between Racing and Barcelona have reportedly stalled over the transfer fee, with Racing demanding around €16million and Barcelona offering €8million. Atletico Madrid has also expressed interest in Salinas.
Additionally, Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde remains on United’s radar. United are monitoring Balde’s situation, particularly if Barcelona were to sign Salinas, as this could impact Balde’s long-term future at Camp Nou.
Despite these alternative targets, Hall remains United’s primary focus as they aim to capitalise on the evolving situation at St James’ Park.
