By George Aldridge — 3 July 2026 — 3 min read

Portugal advanced to the World Cup last 16 after a dramatic victory over Croatia, a match that saw four goals disallowed by VAR. The final moments of the game were particularly contentious, as Croatia had a late equaliser ruled out for offside, a decision that sparked debate among fans and officials.

The match, played in Toronto, was marked by shifting momentum and numerous incidents. Portugal initially dominated the first half, with Pedro Neto creating several opportunities. However, Croatia grew into the game, taking the lead through Ivan Perisic in the second half. Portugal equalised from a penalty converted by Cristiano Ronaldo after a VAR review for a foul on Rafael Leão.

Controversial VAR decisions

The game featured multiple VAR interventions, with four goals ultimately disallowed. One of the most significant moments occurred in the final seconds when Josko Gvardiol scored for Croatia, only for the goal to be overturned due to an offside call against Igor Matanović. This decision led to protests from Croatia‘s side, with manager Zlatko Dalic expressing concerns about the extent of VAR’s influence.

According to football issues correspondent Dale Johnson, the VAR team had no alternative but to disallow the goal. The semi-automated offside technology, developed in partnership with Adidas, uses connected ball technology to detect even slight touches. In this instance, a touch by Igor Matanović was detected, which placed Mario Pasalic in an offside position. This technology was also used in the 2022 World Cup, notably in a situation involving Cristiano Ronaldo where a goal was not credited to him.

Fans shared mixed reactions regarding the VAR decision. Some argued that offside is a clear rule and should be enforced consistently, regardless of when it occurs in the game. Others suggested that VAR detracts from the drama and excitement of football, preferring a more traditional approach to officiating.

Tribute to Diogo Jota

Amidst the on-field drama, Portugal paid an emotional tribute to former player Diogo Jota. Before the match, his picture was displayed on the big screen in Toronto, drawing a loud cheer from supporters. Cristiano Ronaldo appeared visibly moved by the tribute.

At the conclusion of Portugal‘s 2-1 victory, Cristiano Ronaldo donned a special ’21’ shirt in memory of Jota, and the squad collectively held the shirt aloft. Portugal manager Roberto Martinez had earlier referred to Jota as an honorary ‘plus-one’ player when announcing his squad, stating, “Diogo is our sun and our light. We want to win the World Cup for him.”

Ruben Neves, a close friend and former teammate of Jota, spoke about their continued connection, mentioning a WhatsApp group with Jota‘s partner, Rute Cardoso, where he still sends messages. Jota was on his way back to Liverpool for pre-season when he was involved in a car accident. Doctors had advised him against flying due to minor surgery he had undergone.

Cristiano Ronaldo kept his composure to score a penalty against Croatia to make it 1-1.Photograph: Jeff Vogan/ZUMA Press Wire/Shutterstock Credit: theguardian.com

Looking ahead to the next round

With their victory, Portugal has secured a spot in the last 16 of the World Cup, where they are set to face Spain. Spain also advanced after a comfortable win against Austria in Los Angeles. Switzerland has also progressed to the last 16 and awaits the winner of the match between Colombia and Ghana.

The match between Portugal and Croatia saw two of the oldest players to score in a World Cup, with Perisic scoring in the 53rd minute and Ronaldo converting his penalty in the 68th minute.

The decision to disallow Croatia‘s late equaliser by VAR was confirmed as correct by officials, despite the protests and debate it generated.

First-half action in Toronto

The World Cup last-32 match between Portugal and Croatia in Toronto saw a competitive first half, concluding with a score of 0-0. Portugal, featuring Cristiano Ronaldo, had moments of possession and attempts on goal. Early in the match, Leão initiated a play on the left, centring the ball to Bruno Fernandes, whose shot from near the penalty spot was blocked.

Croatia’s defence was tested, with Pongracic forced into a dangerous header that resulted in a corner rather than an own goal. Portugal continued to work the ball, with Croatia deploying numerous defenders in their penalty area. Despite Portugal’s pressure, a lack of off-the-ball movement was noted.

Portugal created further opportunities, including a long ball recycled for Fernandes to shoot from an acute angle, leading to a corner. Another chance arose when Cancelo crossed the ball, which narrowly missed being redirected by Ronaldo or Fernandes. Croatia’s strategy involved drifting backwards to draw Portugal forward before attempting long passes, though one such attempt was flagged offside.

The first half saw a relatively clean game, with a limited number of fouls called. Ruben Dias committed a foul on Budimir just past midfield, but Croatia showed little interest in advancing further from that position. Luka Modric, Croatia’s veteran player, also had a moment with the ball but his pass lacked precision.

Second half begins with intensity

The second half commenced with immediate action. Within 15 seconds of the restart, Mendes advanced into the box, but his pass intended for Ronaldo did not connect, causing the promising move to break down. Shortly after, in the 48th minute, Mateo Kovacic of Croatia made his way into the box, past Cancelo, and his off-balance shot required a save from Portugal’s goalkeeper, Costa, who used his foot to concede a corner.

Mateo Kovacic has an early chance for Croatia as the second half gets under way in Toronto.Photograph: Dylan Martinez Credit: theguardian.com

Croatia made a substitution at half-time, with Matanovic replacing Budimir. Matanovic was immediately involved, winning a duel that allowed Kovacic to shoot, leading to another save and a corner for Croatia. The match saw its first goal in the 53rd minute, with Perisic scoring for Croatia, making the score Portugal 0-1 Croatia. The 37-year-old Perisic broke the deadlock in Toronto.

Ronaldo, who has played every minute for Portugal in North America during the tournament, received the ball with his back to goal approximately 30 yards out but lost possession. Portugal had 69 percent of possession in the first half but managed only one shot on target, indicating a need for greater attacking efficiency in the second half. The team started the second half with the same lineup, including Ronaldo.

Croatia’s journey to this stage included a 4-2 loss to England, followed by victories against Panama (1-0) and Ghana (2-1). Portugal’s group stage performance included a 1-1 draw with DR Congo, a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan where Ronaldo scored twice, and a 0-0 draw with Colombia. Croatia were runners-up in the 2018 World Cup and finished third in 2022.

The atmosphere in Toronto suggested a strong Croatian presence, with fans making their support known. The match continues to unfold as both teams vie for a spot in the next stage of the tournament.

Colombia and Portugal play out a goalless draw

Colombia has secured the top position in Group K following a goalless draw against Portugal in an engaging match. The result sees Colombia advance to face Ghana in the last 32, while Portugal will meet Croatia.

The match, which took place in Miami, saw a significant presence of Colombian supporters, creating an atmosphere that made it feel as though they were the host nation. Despite the vibrant crowd, the game ended without either team finding the back of the net, a somewhat curious outcome given the number of chances created.

Early in the game, Colombia threatened to score within the first minute. A deflection from a potential cross or shot by Luis Díaz found Jhon Córdoba, who headed the ball over the bar. Shortly after, Diogo Costa, Portugal’s goalkeeper, made a one-handed save from another attempt by Córdoba, highlighting Colombia’s early attacking intent.

Cristiano Ronaldo attempts an overhead kick during a hugely entertaining first half.Photograph: Patrícia de Melo Moreira/AFP/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Portugal’s attacking efforts were initially limited, with a shot from Bruno Fernandes being saved by Camilo Vargas. Cristiano Ronaldo’s subsequent overhead kick from the rebound was blocked, and João Félix later fired over the bar as Portugal began to find their rhythm. However, the first half was largely a cautious affair, with Ronaldo remaining on the periphery.

Missed opportunities for both sides

The second half continued with both teams seeking to break the deadlock. Richard Ríos struck the ball wide of Costa’s left-hand post from close range. Ronaldo also had a chance at the other end, but he was deemed offside. Costa was called into action again, making a smart save from Jhon Arias, as Colombia demonstrated their desire for a win rather than settling for the draw that would confirm their top spot in Group K.

Luis Suárez miskicked an opportunity after creating space for himself near Costa’s goal, and a shot from James Rodríguez was cleared by Renato Veiga. These moments underscored Colombia’s dominance in creating scoring chances throughout the encounter.

Portugal’s coach, Roberto Martínez, introduced Rafael Leão from the bench in an attempt to boost his team’s attacking performance. Portugal nearly took the lead through an unexpected source when Diogo Dalot curled a shot wide after receiving a corner from Fernandes.

Colombia’s Davinson Sánchez sees the assistant referee’s flag after thinking he had scored the winner.Photograph: Roberto Schmidt/AFP/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

In stoppage time, Colombia believed they had secured a victory when Davinson Sánchez headed the ball into the net. However, the goal was disallowed for offside, a decision that, in a more pivotal moment of the World Cup, might have generated considerable controversy. Despite the disallowed goal, Colombia’s performance was deemed worthy of challenging Ronaldo’s team.

Player performances and team reflections

According to user ratings, James Rodríguez was named the player of the match with an average rating of 7.57. Other notable performances for Colombia included D. Muñoz with an average rating of 7.38 and S. Arias with 7.30. For Portugal, Diogo Costa received the highest average rating among his teammates at 7.12, followed by Rúben Dias at 6.70.

Martínez acknowledged that Portugal allowed Colombia to dictate the game. He stated that his team did not control possession as desired and were unable to manage the game or utilise their talent effectively. He also noted that Portugal has struggled in two of their three matches so far in the tournament, indicating a need for improvement.

Cristiano Ronaldo, despite his past achievements, was comfortably contained by Colombia. While he has been a prominent figure in previous tournaments, his impact in this match and against DR Congo suggests he still needs to demonstrate his consistent influence if Portugal is to achieve glory. The draw ultimately saw Colombia top Group K, setting up their next fixture against Ghana.

Portugal has launched the Volta deposit return system (DRS) for single-use plastic drinks bottles and metal cans, a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing recycling efforts across the nation. This system, which includes approximately 2,500 reverse vending machines, requires consumers to pay a €0.10 deposit on each eligible container, incentivizing responsible disposal and recycling practices.

Paulo Borges, a key figure in the initiative, emphasized the importance of the DRS, stating, “Portugal’s DRS is a transformative step toward a cleaner environment and a more circular economy.” The operational setup of the Volta DRS involves comprehensive logistics arrangements for the collection and transport of returned containers, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in the recycling process.

In addition to its environmental initiatives, Portugal is witnessing a surge in the use of generative AI among its population. Approximately 80% of Portuguese consumers report utilizing these advanced technologies, surpassing the European average. Daily engagement with generative AI tools stands at 39%, with a notable 62% of users expressing trust in these technologies.

As Portugal gears up for the 2026 World Cup, the national football team is also in the spotlight. Cristiano Ronaldo, who will be 41 during the tournament, has consistently demonstrated his prowess on the field, having scored in every World Cup he has participated in. His remarkable record underscores the team’s potential as they aim to build on their success, including winning the Nations League in 2025 by defeating Spain on penalties.

Portugal has reached the World Cup quarter-finals or better twice in the modern era, and observers consider the current squad a genuine contender for the upcoming tournament. However, as Borges noted, “The talent has rarely been the issue. Turning it into a World Cup win is a different challenge entirely.” This sentiment reflects the high expectations surrounding the team as they prepare for international competition.

As the Volta DRS takes effect, it is expected to significantly reduce waste and improve material recovery, contributing to a more sustainable future. Borges highlighted, “By making it easy for citizens to return drink containers for recycling, we are reducing waste, improving material recovery, and accelerating the transition to a truly circular system.” This initiative aligns with broader environmental goals and reflects Portugal’s commitment to sustainability.

With these developments, Portugal is not only addressing pressing environmental issues but also positioning itself as a leader in technological adoption and sports excellence. The success of the Volta DRS will be closely monitored, as will the performance of the national football team in the upcoming World Cup. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full impact of these initiatives, but the trajectory appears promising for both the environment and the sporting arena.

Strong winds have repeatedly forced the closure of Funchal’s Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport to arrivals and departures. As of April 9, 2026, adverse weather conditions are severely affecting flights to and from Madeira, leading to widespread cancellations and travel disruptions.

Jet2 has issued an alert regarding potential flight disruptions due to heavy rain and strong winds. The airline emphasized that safety is their number one priority, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused to travelers during this challenging period. Meanwhile, Portugal’s national weather agency, IPMA, has issued a yellow warning for wind in the region, indicating that conditions may worsen before they improve.

As the situation unfolds, at least 70 flights to and from Madeira have been canceled today alone. This includes 20 arrivals and 20 departures, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded at the airport. Many travelers are now facing uncertainty as they wait for updates on their flights.

Funchal Airport has warned that adverse weather conditions may continue to affect operations in the coming days. “Weather forecasts indicate adverse conditions that may affect operations (departures and arrivals) in the coming days,” an airport spokesperson stated. This warning adds to the growing concern among travelers who are trying to navigate the disruptions.

ANA, the airport operator, has also cautioned that the adverse weather could lead to further cancellations and delays. The agency is advising passengers to monitor updates from their carriers closely. Travelers are encouraged to check their flight status frequently, as the situation remains fluid.

In light of these developments, travel advisories have been issued, urging travelers to stay informed about their flight schedules. Many are left with no choice but to wait at the airport, hoping for a resolution to the ongoing weather-related issues.

Despite the current turmoil, weather conditions in Madeira are expected to improve gradually after April 9, 2026. However, until that happens, the disruptions are likely to continue, affecting both incoming and outgoing flights.

As officials and airlines work to manage the situation, passengers are reminded to prioritize their safety and stay updated on the latest information regarding their travel plans. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the impact on future flights.

The numbers

Lambeth Council is gearing up to celebrate the borough’s vibrant Portuguese-speaking community with a significant event on June 13, 2026. This celebration coincides with the Day of Portugal, which falls on June 10, and will run from 6 PM to 10 PM, featuring an array of music and dance performances that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the community.

The event is made possible through funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and cultural recognition. Cllr Marcia Cameron remarked, “Our Portuguese-speaking businesses are an essential part of Lambeth’s unique character,” highlighting the integral role this community plays in the borough’s identity.

Little Portugal, known for housing one of the largest Portuguese-speaking populations in the UK, serves as a focal point for this celebration. Cllr Diogo Costa expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am very pleased to see the active role that Lambeth Council is playing in bringing the Day of Portugal celebrations back to the borough.” This event aims to strengthen community ties and celebrate the contributions of Portuguese culture to Lambeth.

In addition to local festivities, the Scottish Under-21 team is set to face Portugal in a match in Estoril on March 31, 2026, as part of the UEFA Under-21 Championship Qualifying. This sporting event further emphasizes the connection between the UK and Portugal, showcasing the talents of young athletes from both nations.

On a broader scale, Portugal is also addressing housing challenges with new tax measures aimed at increasing housing supply and moderating rent prices. The government recently unveiled a tax package that includes a reduced VAT rate of 6% for construction works related to properties designated for moderate rent, defined as a monthly rent not exceeding €2,300.

Additionally, the measures stipulate that properties acquired for moderate rent must not exceed a value of €660,982. However, for non-resident investors acquiring urban properties not intended for moderate rent, the real estate transfer tax rate will increase to 7.5%. These changes reflect Portugal’s ongoing efforts to balance housing needs with market demands.

As the June event approaches, community members and local leaders are optimistic about the celebration’s impact on fostering cultural pride and unity. Observers expect this gathering to not only honor Portugal’s rich heritage but also to strengthen the bonds within Lambeth’s diverse community. Details remain unconfirmed regarding additional activities planned for the event, but the anticipation continues to build as the date draws closer.

What the data shows

The upcoming friendly match between the USA and Portugal on March 31, 2026, raises pressing questions about team readiness and player availability. With Cristiano Ronaldo sidelined due to a hamstring injury, the dynamics of the match could shift significantly. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m. ET at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, and will be broadcast across multiple platforms including TNT, TruTV, HBO Max, Telemundo, Universo, and Peacock.

In their previous outing, the USA suffered a disappointing 5-2 defeat to Belgium, while Portugal managed a goalless draw against Mexico. This context makes the upcoming match crucial for both teams as they look to refine their strategies ahead of the World Cup 2026. Mauricio Pochettino’s USA men’s team aims to bounce back and regain momentum, especially with the absence of their star player, Ronaldo, who has been a pivotal figure for Portugal.

Historically, the USA has not lost any of their previous four meetings against Portugal, which adds an interesting layer to this matchup. The last encounter ended with a narrow victory for Portugal, 2-1, as reported by FourFourTwo. This record could boost the USA’s confidence as they prepare to face a formidable opponent without their most recognized player.

Despite Ronaldo’s absence, Portugal boasts a strong lineup featuring key players like Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, Goncalo Ramos, Ruben Dias, and Bernardo Silva. Their ability to adapt and perform without Ronaldo will be tested in this match. On the other hand, the USA will look to Matt Turner, expected to make his first appearance since last June, to solidify their defense.

The match will also be streamed on HBO Max in the US, with Premier Sports providing coverage in the UK, where subscriptions start at £10 per month. This accessibility ensures that fans across both nations can witness this critical encounter.

As the teams prepare, the focus will be on how they adapt to the absence of key players and the strategies they employ. The USA’s recent performance against Belgium raises concerns, while Portugal’s inability to score against Mexico might suggest vulnerabilities that the USA could exploit.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any last-minute changes to the rosters or strategies, but one thing is clear: this match is pivotal for both teams as they gear up for the World Cup. The outcome may not only affect their confidence but also set the tone for their respective campaigns.

Portugal's electoral system has remained largely unchanged since the Carnation Revolution of 1974, raising questions about its effectiveness. Calls for reform are growing as citizens seek a more representative democracy.

The post Portugal’s Electoral System Faces Calls for Reform appeared first on UKnews.

Portugal’s electoral system has faced increasing scrutiny as calls for reform grow louder. Since the Carnation Revolution of 1974, the structure of the national parliament’s electoral process has changed very little, raising concerns about its effectiveness in representing the populace.

The current system employs Party List Proportional Representation with closed party lists, meaning voters cannot express preferences for individual candidates during legislative elections. This has led to a growing sentiment that the electoral process does not adequately reflect the will of the people.

Portugal is divided into eighteen administrative districts, with electoral districts coinciding with these regions. However, smaller districts face a structural disadvantage due to a limited number of available seats. For instance, Portalegre has only two seats, while larger districts like Lisbon and Porto have 48 and 40 MPs, respectively.

The initiative known as IPP aims to address these concerns by promoting public consultation through focus groups and seminars across the country. Advocates argue that democratic renewal in Portugal requires revisiting and reforming how representatives are elected.

One participant stated, “The project argues that democratic renewal in Portugal requires revisiting and reforming how representatives are elected.” This sentiment echoes the belief that electoral reform is both a means and an end of democratic renewal.

As discussions continue, observers are keenly watching how these initiatives might influence future elections and whether they will lead to a Citizens’ Legislative Initiative in parliament, which requires backing from twenty thousand signatures.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the timeline and specific proposals for reform, but the momentum for change is palpable among the electorate.

In a related note, the Defender brand has made headlines as the official car partner of the Dakar Rally in 2025, showcasing its commitment to extreme performance with a 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 engine.

Defender’s involvement in the rally emphasizes a spirit of overcoming challenges, paralleling the current push for electoral reform in Portugal, as citizens seek to overcome the limitations of their current political system.

As Portugal navigates these pressing issues, the future of its electoral system remains uncertain, with many advocating for a more inclusive and representative democracy.

“Caring for our customers and ensuring their safety is our priority,” stated a spokesperson from Hays Travel, as the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has issued new travel warnings for the United Arab Emirates amid escalating tensions in the region.

The FCDO now advises against all but essential travel to the UAE, urging travelers to avoid areas near security or military facilities. This warning comes in light of the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran, which has raised concerns about safety in the region.

In contrast, the FCDO has updated its travel advice for British nationals heading to Portugal. British passport holders can visit Portugal without requiring a visa for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day timeframe.

For those needing to extend their stay beyond the 90-day limit, the FCDO emphasizes that applications must be made to AIMA under exceptional circumstances, such as a medical emergency. “If you’re visiting Portugal and need to extend your visa-free stay for exceptional reasons, such as a medical emergency, you must apply to AIMA using their contact form,” the guidance states.

Travelers should be aware that from 10 April 2026, the EU’s new Entry/Exit System will require biometric information upon entry to the Schengen zone, which includes Portugal. Failure to comply with the 90-day visa-free limit could result in a ban from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.

Hays Travel reassured customers, stating, “If your holiday is not affected by this advice, normal booking terms and conditions apply.” This statement highlights the importance of staying informed about travel advisories.

As the FCDO continuously refreshes its travel guidance, British nationals are encouraged to keep updated on alerts and entry requirements for their destinations. The situation remains fluid, and travelers should remain vigilant.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further developments in travel advisories as the geopolitical landscape evolves.
