st. george's day — GB news

“More people than ever want to celebrate living in England with a positive, inclusive and shared experience,” said Graham Smith.

As of now, St. George’s Day is set for April 23, 2026. The number of events has skyrocketed by 46% year on year. In total, 161 events are listed for this year’s celebration.

Last year, only 110 events were recorded. The largest category of celebration is pub and bar gatherings, totaling 64 listings. Festivals follow closely behind with 31 events planned.

Morris dancing is also making a comeback—23 events are expected to take place. Greater London leads the way with the highest number of events at 29.

Essex and Kent are also participating, with 13 and 12 events listed respectively. St. George’s Day not only honors the patron saint but also coincides with William Shakespeare’s birthday and death date.

Historically, St. George was a Greek soldier in the Roman Army around 300 AD. He was executed for his Christian beliefs, which adds significance to the day.

Yet, there are those who feel a personal connection to these celebrations. One participant stated, “I consider myself a patriot and I’m proud to be both English and British.” This sentiment reflects a growing desire to reclaim national pride.

As St. George’s Day approaches, communities across England prepare for festivities that celebrate culture and heritage. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional major changes or new events.
