Rashford’s Return to Action

Marcus Rashford made his first appearance for Manchester United since December 2024, coming on as a substitute in a pre-season defeat against AC Milan. This marked his return to the club following loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona. His reintroduction occurred with an hour remaining in the match, as he was one of six substitutes brought on by Michael Carrick.

During his warm-up, Rashford received a positive reception from United supporters. He also shared a moment with Martinez, a rival from the World Cup semi-final a month prior. Once on the pitch, Rashford played wider than Patrick Dorgu, whom he replaced on the left. Despite conceding a foul early on, he later executed a skillful play near the corner flag that drew a reaction from the crowd.

The number nine shirt worn by Rashford in Poland was clarified by United officials as not being permanent. This clarification aimed to prevent potential complaints from fans considering purchasing the shirt. Rashford appeared relaxed throughout the proceedings.

Uncertain Future at Old Trafford

Despite his return to the pitch, Rashford’s immediate future at Manchester United remains uncertain. He is reportedly planning to hold discussions with manager Michael Carrick after the squad returns from its commitments in Dublin. There is speculation that Rashford is looking for an opportunity to leave the club, with his options for remaining in the Premier League appearing limited.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly keen to reduce Rashford’s salary burden but is unwilling to sell him to direct rivals such as Arsenal, Liverpool, or Manchester City. Loan deals to clubs like Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Tottenham have also been ruled out, as United bosses reportedly wish to avoid the embarrassment of Rashford helping these clubs secure Champions League positions.

Rashford is understood to prefer finding a new club to revitalise his career. He has the option of seeing out the remaining 24 months of his contract, which would allow him to leave Old Trafford as a free agent in 2028. Alternatively, he could use the upcoming campaign to showcase his abilities in the hope of securing a transfer in 2027, assuming a club is willing to meet the financial demands.

Rashford reportedly believes there has been significant tension between him and his boyhood club. He had hoped to make his loan move to Barcelona permanent, but the Spanish club declined the option to sign him for £24m, instead opting for Anthony Gordon. The transfer deadline on 1 September is expected to bring clarity to his situation.

Tielemans’ Perspective on Rashford

New Manchester United signing Youri Tielemans, who recently joined from Aston Villa, shared his positive experiences playing alongside Rashford. Tielemans and Rashford were teammates during the England international’s loan spell at Aston Villa in the latter half of the 2024/25 season. Tielemans described Rashford as “great” and highlighted his humility, hard work, and impressive acceleration from their time together at Villa Park.

Tielemans noted the media attention surrounding Rashford but emphasised his strong performance and positive attributes during their time at Villa. He expressed hope that Rashford could bring those qualities to Manchester United. Tielemans also mentioned his reunion with Jonny Evans, who was a teammate at Leicester and is now part of Carrick’s coaching staff at United.

Tielemans’ move to United was unexpected, coming about due to a £35m release clause. He had previously been of interest to the club on other occasions but stated he was focused on the World Cup and not expecting a transfer this summer. He captained Belgium at the World Cup, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Spain.

United are reportedly considering opening discussions with Club Brugge for a potential £30m deal for left-back Joaquin Seys, after being priced out of a move for Lewis Hall.
