Manchester United are reportedly working to secure the long-term future of teenage talent JJ Gabriel, with the club said to be concerned about retaining him. This effort comes amid significant interest from other major clubs, including Chelsea.
United are preparing to offer scholarship terms to Gabriel and are also exploring a pre-contract agreement for professional terms. This strategy aims to counter the growing attention on the player, who is widely considered a top talent for his age globally.
Gabriel’s rapid rise and club interest
Gabriel, who was born in London, has attracted considerable attention for some time. In early 2025, at the age of 14, he became the youngest player to feature for Manchester United’s Under-18 side. Later that year, after turning 15 in October, he was assigned squad number 95 and had the opportunity to train with United’s first team. He was also named Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season.
More recently, Gabriel became the youngest player to represent the club in a pre-season friendly when he came off the bench against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm. He also featured in a senior matchday squad against Rosenborg in Norway, the second pre-season game of the summer. He was included in the travelling squad for a training camp near Dublin.
The next formal step for Gabriel is to sign scholarship terms, which he becomes eligible to do in October when he turns 16. However, United are aware that scholarship terms alone may not fully safeguard against losing a player of his potential before he turns 17 in 2027.
Sources indicate that United aim to go further than just securing his scholarship, seeking to put a pre-contract in place for professional terms. This proactive approach is in response to the extraordinary level of interest in Gabriel.
While clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund have reportedly been monitoring Gabriel since he was around 13, United’s most significant concern is believed to be from closer to home. Chelsea are understood to be the strongest Premier League suitor for Gabriel, as they are focused on identifying and recruiting top young talent.
Other English clubs, including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and Liverpool, are also reportedly monitoring the situation, indicating that United face competition from nearly every major club in England and Europe.
United’s confidence and future plans
Despite the widespread interest, United remain confident in the pathway they have established for Gabriel and believe he is committed to continuing his development at Old Trafford. The club’s youth structure is seen as central to his rapid progression, and United believe he can continue advancing towards first-team football without needing to seek opportunities elsewhere.
The club acknowledges that the coming months are crucial. Once Gabriel becomes eligible to sign scholarship terms in October, attention around his future is expected to intensify. United are working to ensure they have taken every possible step to protect one of the most highly-regarded young players in world football.
Gabriel has continued to train with the first team and has played for the Under-21s in behind-closed-doors friendlies this summer. He is yet to make his competitive debut for the Under-21 age group. A proper senior debut in the first half of the season is considered possible. According to one report, United told Gabriel last summer that he could become ‘the face of the club’ in the coming years.
United’s Under-18s will begin their league fixture against Manchester City at Carrington on August 22. The Under-21s are set to start their season against Ipswich two days after United’s first-team plays Hull in the Premier League.
