A fire broke out at a storage building on RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire early Tuesday. Firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 2 a.m. local time. No injuries were reported from the fire.
The fire involved a single-story industrial storage building, which was disused. Crews from the Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service worked throughout the morning to ensure it was completely contained.
According to the 501st Combat Support Wing Public Affairs, “There were no injuries sustained, the fire has been contained and currently poses no risk to the base or local community.” Residents nearby were advised to keep their doors and windows closed due to smoke.
Officials believe the cause of the fire is accidental based on early indications. Still, an investigation is ongoing.
RAF Fairford has been a significant site for U.S. Air Force operations since its establishment during World War II. The base has been actively used in operations against Iran.
Approximately 200 protesters gathered outside the base earlier this month, reflecting local tensions regarding U.S. military actions abroad. Recent polls indicate that 65% of Britons disapprove of these strikes.
As of midday, there is uncertainty about whether this incident will impact operational activity at RAF Fairford.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the fire occurred inside the wire in an old building on the base. They emphasized that safety protocols were followed during the incident.
This incident comes amid heightened concerns over conflicts affecting energy prices—86% of the population expresses worry about rising gas costs due to ongoing military actions.
