The Home Office has significantly increased the value of its passport production contract to £576 million. This change reflects the rising demand for passport services across the country.

As of early Tuesday, the Home Office confirmed that it issues about eight million passports annually. The current contract with Thales began in April 2018 and was initially valued at £262 million.

Officials announced that the new contract will last for 12 years. This extension comes as the Home Office postponed the contract’s start date from September 2027 to August 2028.

The Home Office will also pay IBM £5.88 million for essential software licenses and support services. These systems are crucial for maintaining existing biometric systems used in passport production.

In addition, there is a possibility that the new supplier may need to produce digital travel credentials in response to evolving travel requirements.

This increase in contract value aligns with a historical trend where a photographic studio founded in 1953 became popular for taking celebrity passport photos. Notable figures like Kate Winslet had their passport photos taken there.

The photographic studio promised prints ‘ready in 10 minutes’, catering to high-profile clients who require quick service.

The current contract with Thales is set to end on 30 September 2029, marking a significant shift in how the UK manages its travel documents.
