Ireland vs India: Irish stun world champions in T20 opener at StormontIreland vs India: Irish stun world champions in T20 opener at Stormont

Ireland secures a landmark victory

Ireland achieved a significant milestone in international cricket by securing their first senior international victory against India, the reigning T20 World Cup champions. The historic win occurred during the opening T20 international at Stormont in Belfast. The hosts clinched a 34-run victory, ending a long winless streak against India in the shorter format of the game, marking their first triumph in nine attempts in T20 internationals and 12 across all formats.

The match saw a crowd of over 4,000 spectators gather at Stormont. Many had anticipated witnessing a record-breaking debut for India’s young batting talent, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. However, India opted to hold the 15-year-old in reserve and chose to bowl first after winning the toss.

Ireland’s new captain, Lorcan Tucker, led the batting effort for the home side. His crucial half-century contributed significantly to Ireland posting a total of 182-9. Tucker’s innings of 50 runs came off 36 balls and included two sixes. He was also part of a vital 64-run fifth-wicket partnership with Gareth Delany, who scored 49 runs from 32 deliveries.

Despite India’s quick start in response, with Abhishek Sharma hitting 50 runs off just 20 balls, Ireland’s bowlers maintained their composure. Matthew Hollard and Jai Moondra, both making their debuts, played pivotal roles in securing the victory. India was eventually dismissed for 148 runs with seven balls remaining in their innings.

Debutants shine for Ireland

The match was particularly notable for the performances of Ireland’s debutant bowlers. Matthew Hollard, from Balbriggan, was named player of the match for his impressive figures of 3-28. He dismissed key Indian batsmen including Ishan Kishan, captain Shreyas Iyer, and Washington Sundar.

Jai Moondra, representing Leinster CC and born in India, also made a significant impact. He claimed two wickets for 2-26. Notably, Moondra removed India opener Sanju Samson with his very first delivery in international cricket. Moondra was praised by Ireland’s bowling coach, Ryan Eagleson, for his pace, skill, and strategic bowling, including knowing when to bowl bouncers and vary his pace.

Hollard expressed his delight at the outcome, stating that making his debut against India was a dream come true. He mentioned the support from his family, who travelled from Johannesburg, and the journey he undertook to play for Ireland, which included setbacks due to Covid after initially planning to move in 2019. Cricket Ireland was acknowledged for their support.

The debutants’ success was particularly impactful given that Ireland was missing key bowlers due to injury, including Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, and Josh Little. This situation provided an opportunity for new talent to step up, and Hollard and Moondra seized it, showcasing their abilities with pace and astute bowling.

Match dynamics and what’s next

After India elected to bowl first, Ireland’s top order faced early challenges, with Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh combining to dismiss Tim Tector (17), Ross Adair (12), and Harry Tector (a three-ball duck) for a combined 30 runs within the first four overs. However, Tucker’s leadership and the subsequent partnership with Delany helped stabilise and build Ireland’s innings.

India’s chase began strongly with Abhishek Sharma’s rapid half-century. However, after Sharma was caught by Ben Calitz off a Liam McCarthy delivery, leaving India at 80-4, their middle order struggled to recover. Matthew Humphreys, who also took 3-38, played a crucial role in wrapping up the match, dismissing Rana (8) and Arshdeep Singh (2) in the penultimate over, sealing the victory for Ireland.

Captain Lorcan Tucker acknowledged the monumental win and praised his team’s diligence and skill, particularly that of the debutants. He also indicated that the team is eager to continue their winning form. The two sides are scheduled to face each other again at Stormont on Sunday at 13:30 BST.

This victory marks a significant moment for Irish cricket, especially considering India’s strong reputation as T20 World Cup holders. The performance of the debutants, particularly Hollard and Moondra, provided a compelling narrative for the opening match of the series, setting a high standard for the upcoming fixture on Sunday.
