Iraola’s Stance on Jones’ Future

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has expressed his desire for midfielder Curtis Jones to remain at the club, stating he will hold discussions with the player regarding his future. Iraola, who recently took over as head coach, indicated he rates Jones highly and hopes he continues to perform for the team. The manager highlighted Jones’ local connection, noting that he is “Scouse” and from the area, and praised his personality and character. Iraola hopes to retain Jones not only for the upcoming season but for a longer period.

The new Reds head coach plans to speak with the midfielder to convince him that his future lies on Merseyside. This comes after Jones reportedly made just 18 starts in the league last season under Arne Slot, with some appearances out of his natural position at right-back, leading him to assess his options for increased game time.

Inter Milan’s Persistent Interest

Italian club Inter Milan has shown significant interest in Jones, making him one of their priority midfield targets since the January transfer window. Liverpool has rejected two offers from Inter since the end of last season. The most recent proposal, submitted last month, was reportedly significantly below Liverpool’s valuation for the player.

Sources indicate that Inter Milan’s latest offer was valued at £21 million. The Italian champions are reportedly prepared to increase their bid to around £25 million and could potentially go higher, though there is a reluctance to meet Liverpool’s asking price of £30 million. Inter believes their valuation is fair, considering Jones has just 12 months remaining on his current contract with Liverpool.

Despite Inter’s persistence, Liverpool continues to value Jones at a higher figure, citing the inflated transfer fees seen across the Premier League this summer. While Liverpool is open to negotiations, they have made it clear they do not wish to sanction a sale for less than £30 million.

Jones’ Perspective and Liverpool’s Plans

Jones is reportedly encouraged by Inter Milan’s continued pursuit and is open to a move to the San Siro. Although he is prepared to compete for his place under Iraola at Liverpool, Jones believes his chances of becoming a regular starter would be greater in Milan. This situation presents Liverpool with a significant decision regarding their squad.

As things stand, Liverpool is reportedly comfortable with their current midfield options if Jones remains at Anfield, and signing another central midfielder is not considered a priority. However, if Jones were to depart before the transfer window closes, Liverpool is expected to enter the market to find a replacement. The club’s strategy is clear: if Jones leaves, a new midfielder will be signed; if he stays, no new midfield acquisition is planned.

Iraola, who signed a two-year contract last month after replacing Slot, also reflected on the nature of managing in football. He noted the high turnover of managers in the Premier League, with approximately half of the clubs changing their managers from last season to this season. His focus remains on building a strong team that fans can connect with and be proud of.
