Gillingham FC has announced the swift departure of 16 players, including veteran goalkeeper Glenn Morris, less than 24 hours after their final match of the season.
As of early Tuesday, Morris departs following 135 appearances across two spells with the club. He received a special tribute ahead of the match against Shrewsbury, where Gillingham finished 17th in League Two.
Morris won two ‘Player of the Year’ awards during his time at Gillingham. His contributions have been significant, and the club acknowledged his professionalism and dedication.
Key departures include:
- Jonny Williams, who made his 400th career appearance.
- Sam Vokes, who has retired from football at age 36.
- Unused substitute Jake Turner leaving on a free transfer.
- Travis Akomeah returning to parent club Watford after his loan.
Five players who featured in the final match against Shrewsbury have already been released. Coach Gareth Ainsworth hinted at these changes before the match, stating, “You’ll find out tomorrow that there’s some players in that team that are not here next year.”
The club also triggered contract options for four players: Bradley Dack, Garath McCleary, Damien Theodore, and Armani Little. Additionally, apprentices Cruz Beszant, Louie Dayal, and Michael Luxton have been offered professional contracts.
This overhaul follows a disappointing season where Gillingham maintained their position in League Two. Observers expect further announcements regarding player negotiations and potential signings as the club prepares for next season.
