Sam Vokes concluded his professional career with a 1-0 victory for Gillingham F.C. against Shrewsbury Town on May 6, 2025. The match took place at Priestfield Stadium, marking the end of the 2025/26 season.
As of early Tuesday, Vokes received a guard of honour from his teammates during the game. Garath McCleary scored the winning goal from 25 yards out.
Vokes made a total of 751 appearances throughout his career. He expressed pride in his achievements, stating, “I am proud of what I have achieved.” He also mentioned it was a “lovely touch” to finish with three points.
The Gillingham squad will see changes as players leaving include Travis Akomeah, Joshua Andrews, and Max Clark. Meanwhile, Cameron Antwi and Omar Beckles remain under contract for the next season.
Apprentices Cruz Beszant and Louie Dayal received professional contracts following their performances this season.
The club has acknowledged Vokes’ contributions and wishes all departing players the best in their future endeavours. Vokes stated, “It has been a joy being a part of this squad this year.” His retirement marks a significant moment for Gillingham F.C.
