A recent report indicates that a significant number of UK convenience stores and vape shops may serve as fronts for organized crime. Up to 50% of these retailers are suspected of illicit activities. Meanwhile, the Swedish Moose Candy Company has introduced a unique candy experience in the US.

As of early Tuesday, findings revealed that around 33% of American candy stores are also suspected fronts for criminal operations. A survey conducted by Trading Standards showed alarming statistics regarding retail crime.

Key statistics from Trading Standards:

  • 97% of officers are aware of suspected criminal operations within retail premises.
  • 72% have reported intimidation or threats while on duty.
  • 85% of retailers noted an increase in illicit trading in their areas.

John Herriman, a spokesperson for Trading Standards, stated, “It is clear from this research that serious and organised crime is endemic across the UK.” This alarming trend raises questions about the integrity of local businesses.

In contrast, the Swedish Moose Candy Co., which opened in Downtown Provo at the end of 2025, offers an alternative. Their products emphasize natural ingredients like red pepper and beets, setting them apart from heavily processed American candies.

Sanna Mård-Castman, a representative for the company, emphasized the importance of mindful consumption. “You know, our bodies and our minds are now so sensitive to everything that we eat and drink,” she said.

Additionally, KitKat Panama has introduced a phone-blocking candy wrapper called Break Mode. This innovative design aims to encourage digital detox by preventing phone signals using a Faraday cage.

The juxtaposition between rising concerns over criminal activities in retail spaces and the introduction of healthier candy options reflects a significant shift in consumer preferences and market dynamics.
