ascend airways liquidation — GB news

Ascend Airways has confirmed it will hand back its aircraft fleet and relinquish its UK Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC). The airline abruptly ceased all operations on May 1, 2026, due to significant economic challenges, including the impact of the Iranian conflict on jet fuel availability.

Employees were informed that operations would wind down after the final Oman Air service from Muscat on April 30. One employee stated, “It’s gone bust today; we got the news this afternoon. We’ve all been given the letters that it’s all going into liquidation.”

The airline, established in 2004 and operating under its current name since 2023, primarily functioned as a ‘wet-lease’ provider for other airlines. At the time of closure, it had a fleet comprising one Boeing 737-800 and six Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

Key facts:

  • The airline has surrendered its UK AOC, which is essential for conducting commercial flights in the UK.
  • Employees face uncertainty regarding their salaries and may not receive full payment for May.
  • Ascend Airways Malaysia will continue trading as normal despite the cessation of UK operations.

Another employee expressed concern about their financial situation: “We’re not going to get paid for May, and we have to go through the liquidators. You could get up to £750 a week but we’re not going to get the full amount we’re owed.”

While Ascend Airways faces liquidation in the UK, its Malaysian division remains operationally stable. It continues to meet all contractual obligations and is progressing with expansion plans.
