Squad Announcement for Pakistan Series
England Men have announced a 16-player squad for the initial two Rothesay Tests against Pakistan. The series is scheduled to commence at Headingley on Wednesday 19 August. This selection aims to balance emerging talent with the necessary experience to face a strong Pakistan team.
Among the notable inclusions is Dan Lawrence, who returns to the Test squad two years after his last appearance against Sri Lanka. Lawrence, who is the second-leading runscorer in Division One of the Rothesay County Championship this season, is expected to bat at six. Marcus North, England Men National Selector, highlighted Lawrence’s exceptional season with Surrey, noting his experience, maturity, and skill as valuable additions to the middle order.
Jordan Cox, who made his Test debut earlier this summer against New Zealand at the Kia Oval, is slated to bat at three. This opportunity arises due to the absence of Jacob Bethell, who sustained a right knee injury during the Metro Bank ODI series against India last month. Bethell’s injury will sideline him for the entirety of the Rothesay Test Series against Pakistan. North described Cox as one of the most exciting talents in English cricket, emphasizing the significant opportunity this presents for the Essex wicketkeeper-batter.
Key Returns and Captaincy
The squad also sees the return of Ollie Pope and Brydon Carse for the first time since the Ashes Series defeat in Australia last winter. Pope, a Surrey wicketkeeper-batter, can cover various top-seven batting positions and can also keep wicket if needed. His recall is partly attributed to his 64 caps and his team-first outlook. Carse, meanwhile, returns after withdrawing from this year’s IPL due to a hand injury.
Joe Root will captain the Test team in a permanent capacity for the first time since 2022, leading the side in front of his home crowd at Headingley. Harry Brook is expected to serve as Root’s deputy, with Ben Duckett also providing experienced counsel. The return of Root to captaincy follows the departures of former head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes.
Sam Cook is another player included in the squad, having played one Test against Zimbabwe last summer. The selection also features Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, Ollie Robinson, Jamie Smith, and Josh Tongue.
Coaching and Squad Dynamics
The new head coach, Stephen Fleming, will not take charge until after the three-match series against Pakistan. However, Marcus North confirmed that Fleming was heavily involved in the squad selection discussions, ensuring alignment with his vision for the team’s future. Marcus Trescothick will perform the role of head coach for the series against Pakistan.
The enlarged squad, which includes seven fast bowlers, reflects a demanding fixture schedule, with the series starting just three days after the final of The Hundred. This necessitates careful management of player workloads and fitness. Sam Curran was identified as a potential player to fill the void left by Ben Stokes, though he was not selected for this squad due to fitness concerns.
The panel’s focus remains on both immediate performance and future development, as evidenced by the inclusion of players like Jordan Cox. North stressed that the squad was selected for the present, aiming to improve results after a challenging period for England, which has seen six defeats in their past eight Tests. The first Test is scheduled from Wednesday 19 August to Sunday 23 August at Headingley, Leeds.
