Dubai has been struck by overnight flooding following intense downpours, with authorities activating emergency measures across the UAE. The storms, which began late last night, have resulted in significant rainfall, lightning strikes, and strong winds affecting large parts of the region.
Notably, lightning struck the iconic Burj Khalifa, which stands at a height of 829 meters (2,722 feet). The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has forecasted unstable weather conditions to persist until Friday morning, with rain of varying intensity expected, sometimes accompanied by thunder and lightning.
In response to the severe weather, Dubai’s police force has intensified efforts to manage traffic and ensure safety on the roads. Residents are advised to check flight information as travel plans may be disrupted due to the adverse weather conditions.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms have swept across the UAE, with Sharjah recording some of the strongest rainfall this week, accumulating nearly 50mm. Wind speeds have been moderate to fresh, reaching up to 40 km/h, which may raise dust and sand, further reducing visibility.
Dubai Municipality teams are on standby to address waterlogging and drainage issues in low-lying areas. Authorities have issued safety alerts, advising caution on the roads due to heavy rainfall and reduced visibility.
As the weather system is driven by a combination of surface and upper-air low-pressure zones, residents are urged to remain vigilant. The Dubai Media Office has confirmed that unstable weather conditions will continue, warning of potential hazards on the roads.
“Dubai will experience unstable weather conditions until the morning of Friday, 27 March 2026,” stated the Dubai Media Office. They further warned, “Rain: Of varying intensity, at times accompanied by lightning and thunder. Wind speed: Occasionally strong, potentially raising dust and sand, which may reduce horizontal visibility.”
