A petition advocating for legal recognition of intended parents from birth has gained significant traction, prompting a parliamentary debate in the UK. The petition, started by Adam Frisby and Jamie Corbett after welcoming their daughter via surrogacy in the US, has amassed over 110,000 signatures.

The current UK law recognizes the surrogate as the legal mother. This requires intended parents to undergo a lengthy court process to gain legal recognition. Many families have expressed frustration with this outdated system.

Three years ago, the Law Commission recommended reform to allow intended parents to be recognized from birth. However, no government action has been taken since then. “It’s exciting to see UK surrogacy laws being discussed and debated at the highest level,” said Sarah Dodds, a supporter of the petition.

In related news, survivors of the Tai Po fire are also mobilizing. They collected 247 handwritten signatures for a petition calling for a homeowners’ meeting regarding long-term resettlement. This represents over 12 percent of all households at Wang Fuk Court.

The Tai Po fire occurred on November 26, 2025, claiming 168 lives and displacing many homeowners. Jason Kong, a representative of the survivors, stated, “We’ve collected signatures from around 12 percent of all households — more than enough to call a general meeting.”

The petition was delivered to Hop On Management on April 29, 2026. The responsibility of further verifying those signatures lies with Hop On.

As discussions continue regarding both petitions, it remains unclear when any legislative changes will occur regarding surrogacy law or homeowner meetings.

The UK will begin raising the state pension age to 67 in 2026, affecting millions of workers nearing retirement.

The UK government will begin increasing the state pension age to 67 starting in April 2026. This change will affect millions of workers approaching retirement.

The qualifying age will rise incrementally over the next two years until it reaches 67. Those born between April 6 and May 5, 1960, are the first cohort impacted by this adjustment.

The Treasury anticipates that this change will result in savings of approximately £10 billion annually by 2030. Currently, the new flat-rate state pension stands at £241.30 per week, or £12,547.60 annually.

Recipients of the old basic state pension receive £184.90 weekly, totaling £9,614.80 each year. To qualify for the full state pension, individuals typically need 35 years of national insurance contributions.

Charities have raised concerns that the increase in the state pension age may disproportionately affect areas with lower healthy life expectancy. For instance, men in Wokingham are expected to remain healthy until nearly 70, while those in Blackpool have a healthy life expectancy of just 52.

Pension Credit could offer an additional £4,300 this year for eligible pensioners. The Department for Work and Pensions estimates more than 700,000 people are eligible for Pension Credit but are not claiming it.

Peter Bradbury expressed frustration about the changes: “It is annoying; I’ll do some other work and I can’t travel as much as I wanted to.” Laurence O’Brien added that “the people most affected are often those least able to adjust through staying in work or drawing on other savings.” Lily Megson-Harvey emphasized that people can still take control of their retirement despite these changes.

The Tesco equal pay tribunal is set to begin, potentially impacting over 60,000 workers and costing the company billions.

The post Tesco equal pay tribunal appeared first on UKnews.

The Tesco equal pay tribunal is scheduled to start on May 1, 2026, in Reading, UK. This case could have significant implications for over 60,000 store workers claiming pay inequality against Tesco. The claimants argue that the retailer pays its shop staff less than distribution center employees without lawful justification.

Before this development, many anticipated a lengthy legal battle with uncertain outcomes. However, the decisive moment arrives as claimants assert that Tesco’s defense hinges on commercial interests rather than equitable pay practices.

The key facts of the case include:

The tribunal will hear Tesco’s defense regarding the alleged disparity in hourly wages.

Claimants allege that a £5.50 hourly wage difference exists between store workers and their counterparts in distribution centers.

The overall value of the case is estimated at £4 billion by Leigh Day.

Experts suggest that this ruling could set a precedent for similar claims across the retail sector. Paula Lee from Leigh Day stated, “Our clients believe the evidence will show that there is no lawful justification for continuing to pay predominantly female store workers less for work of equal value.” This highlights ongoing concerns regarding the gender pay gap within large corporations.

Tesco contends that equalizing pay could inflict serious damage to its business model. They argue that market conditions and operational needs dictate current wage structures. A company representative said, “The gap in pay was determined by market conditions and genuine pressing operational needs.” Yet, claimants maintain that Tesco has control over how pay is set across its business.

A judgment is expected later this year. The outcome may lead to possible industrial action among warehouse staff if Tesco faces a ruling against it.

The Home Office has significantly increased the value of its passport production contract to £576 million. This change reflects the rising demand for passport services across the country.

As of early Tuesday, the Home Office confirmed that it issues about eight million passports annually. The current contract with Thales began in April 2018 and was initially valued at £262 million.

Officials announced that the new contract will last for 12 years. This extension comes as the Home Office postponed the contract’s start date from September 2027 to August 2028.

The Home Office will also pay IBM £5.88 million for essential software licenses and support services. These systems are crucial for maintaining existing biometric systems used in passport production.

In addition, there is a possibility that the new supplier may need to produce digital travel credentials in response to evolving travel requirements.

This increase in contract value aligns with a historical trend where a photographic studio founded in 1953 became popular for taking celebrity passport photos. Notable figures like Kate Winslet had their passport photos taken there.

The photographic studio promised prints ‘ready in 10 minutes’, catering to high-profile clients who require quick service.

The current contract with Thales is set to end on 30 September 2029, marking a significant shift in how the UK manages its travel documents.

An inquiry revealed that a triple killer, Valdo Calocane, was discharged from mental health services due to healthcare workers being unable to locate him. This alarming finding raises serious concerns about public safety.

On June 13, 2023, Calocane stabbed to death three individuals in Nottingham, UK. The victims were Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both aged 19, and Ian Coates, aged 65.

Calocane had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was under the care of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust for two years before his discharge. His last engagement with the Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) team occurred via phone on July 16, 2022.

Healthcare workers reported difficulties in locating Calocane. Emma Robinson, a team leader at the trust, stated that they felt it was safer to discharge someone back to their GP if they could not engage with them.

The decision to discharge Calocane came despite warnings from a consultant psychiatrist who expressed concerns that he would eventually harm someone. This sequence of events highlights critical gaps in the mental health services.

The inquiry continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Calocane’s discharge. Officials have not confirmed whether additional measures will be implemented in response to these findings.

This case underscores the urgent need for effective early intervention strategies within mental health services to ensure public safety. The outcome of this inquiry may lead to significant changes in policy and practice within the NHS trust.

Romania's pro-European government collapsed following a no-confidence vote, signaling unexpected alliances between the far-right and social democrats.

Romania’s pro-European government collapsed after losing a confidence vote on May 5, 2026. The no-confidence motion received 281 votes in the 464-seat parliament, marking a significant shift in the political landscape.

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, who led the National Liberal Party (PNL), faced opposition from both the Social Democrats (PSD) and the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR). This unexpected alliance raises concerns in Brussels about Romania’s political stability.

The AUR has recently gained popularity, surpassing the PSD in polls with approximately 37% support. This shift indicates a growing influence of far-right politics in Romania.

Romania’s current minority government is expected to remain in an interim capacity until a new prime minister is nominated. However, no timeline has been shared regarding when this nomination might occur.

The country is also grappling with economic challenges, as it reported a budget deficit of nearly 8% in 2025—the highest in the European Union. In contrast, the budget deficit was around 9.3% in 2024.

Sorin Grindeanu from the PSD commented, “There is life after the no-confidence vote.” Meanwhile, Ilie Bolojan criticized the motion as “false, cynical and artificial,” emphasizing that it lacks any viable alternative.

Nicușor Dan is expected to hold consultations with party leaders to explore options for forming a new coalition government. However, uncertainties remain about whether early elections will be called before the next parliamentary election scheduled for 2028.

Officials have not confirmed how soon parliament will approve a nominee for prime minister, which could take up to 60 days. The political situation remains fluid as stakeholders navigate these changes.

“Now that the cousins are getting older, it’s becoming harder to justify keeping them apart,” a source revealed. Despite this sentiment, Prince William remains firmly opposed to reconciling with his brother, Prince Harry.

As of early Tuesday, reports indicate that Prince William has agreed for his children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—to meet their cousins, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The potential meeting is expected to take place in the U.K. sometime this summer.

However, William’s discomfort with direct reconciliation remains significant. He is reportedly maintaining distance from Harry and has resisted reunion efforts between Harry, Meghan Markle, and the royal family.

The ongoing rift traces back to January 2020 when Harry stepped away from royal duties. Tensions have escalated following Harry’s recent trip to Australia, which has further strained relations.

William’s stance suggests he views Harry’s actions as incompatible with royal loyalty and discretion. Sources indicate that he has a non-negotiable issue regarding his brother that he refuses to compromise on.

The brothers have not spoken since Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in September 2022. King Charles III is keen to ensure family ties remain intact for the next generation amidst this ongoing estrangement.

Sources also note that Harry has refused to bring his children to the U.K. without adequate protection. In an effort to maintain boundaries, William is reportedly blocking an invite for Harry and his family to Sandringham.

The next expected development will revolve around whether the planned meeting between the cousins actually takes place this summer.

Dubai’s Financial Audit Authority (FAA) has completed its first internal audit quality review for the Community Development Authority (CDA). This review comes as tensions rise in the region, with expectations of US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

The FAA rated the CDA as ‘Generally Conforms’ after the assessment. This rating indicates a high alignment with global internal audit standards.

The external assessment is part of FAA’s core consulting services aimed at enhancing governance and oversight practices. Faisal Kazim, director of FAA’s Consulting & Business Excellence Department, emphasized that delivering independent quality assurance assessments is crucial for improving governance.

Talal Al Hashmi, CDA’s internal audit and risk management director, noted that this external assessment represents a valuable addition to their continuous development journey.

According to global standards, such external quality reviews are required at least once every five years. The FAA’s role includes supporting government entities in governance, risk management, compliance, and internal control.

As of midday Tuesday, reports indicate that the UAE’s oil export facilities have been targeted by Iran amid escalating tensions. This has led to heightened concerns over regional stability.

Within hours, US airforce jets were scrambled over UAE and other Gulf states to conduct combat air patrols. Brent oil prices surged due to market worries about the escalating conflict.

A source indicated that Dubai expects US and Israeli strikes on Iran within the next 24 hours. This anticipation adds to the already tense atmosphere in the region.

An OnlyFans model disrupted the World Snooker Championship final on May 3, 2026, at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. Sasha Swan shouted against the BBC licence fee during a match between Shaun Murphy and Wu Yize.

The incident occurred during the third frame of the match. Wu Yize was leading 10-7 at that time. Swan’s protest drew immediate attention and controversy.

Sasha Swan yelled, “Who f—ing pays their TV licence anyway?” Her outburst caught spectators off guard. Referee Rob Spencer quickly intervened to prevent her from reaching the playing area.

Security personnel soon ejected Swan from the venue. The audience reacted negatively, booing her and applauding her removal. This incident added to a history of protests targeting snooker finals.

In the ongoing Tamil Nadu elections, C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is leading in 110 of the 234 constituencies. This marks a significant challenge to established parties like AIADMK and DMK.

The AIADMK-led alliance is currently ahead in 62 seats, while the ruling DMK alliance has secured leads in 61 seats. The overall voter turnout has been exceptionally high, contributing to these results.

Vijay contested from two constituencies—Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East—and is leading in both. In Tiruchirappalli East, he holds a margin of 6,499 votes after the first round of counting.

TVK has promised substantial benefits to voters, including a monthly assistance of Rs.2,500 for women under 60 years of age and eight grams of gold along with a silk saree for brides from low-income families. These promises seem to resonate well with voters.

TVK candidates are notably leading in several constituencies that have traditionally been strongholds for the DMK. This shift could indicate a changing political landscape in Tamil Nadu.

The election results indicate a potential realignment ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Observers are closely watching how these developments will affect the power dynamics among major political parties.
