artemis 2 — GB news

“The Artemis 2 crew will feast on 189 food items including five different types of hot sauces, mango salad, beef brisket and more than 10 beverages,” announced NASA officials, highlighting the meticulous planning behind the upcoming mission.

Scheduled for launch on April 1, 2026, Artemis 2 will send four astronauts on a historic flyby mission around the Moon, marking the first crewed spaceflight in over 54 years since Apollo 17 in 1972. The crew comprises NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

As part of NASA’s Artemis program, this mission aims to pave the way for future lunar exploration and the establishment of a semi-permanent moon base by 2032. NASA plans to invest approximately $20 billion over the next seven years to build this base through a series of missions.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the long-term vision, stating, “The moon base will not appear overnight. We will invest approximately $20 billion over the next seven years and build it through dozens of missions, working together with commercial and international partners towards a deliberate and achievable plan.”

The Artemis II crew will be equipped with a carefully curated menu, as all meals must be shelf-stable and easy to prepare without refrigeration. This includes 43 cups of coffee available for the crew during their 10-day mission.

NASA’s Moon Base Program Executive, Carlos Garcia-Galan, elaborated on the infrastructure plans, noting, “Definitely see a bunch of infrastructure for power, both potentially nuclear, which is maybe shielded to a bunch of solar array towers that are either directly connected to the habitation modules or perhaps on the side at different locations, providing power to some of the assets that are moving around, pressurized rovers, advance LTVs and then different landing sites for human landings, cargo landings.”

Following Artemis 2, NASA has targeted Artemis IV for early 2028 to send astronauts to the lunar surface, with Artemis V planned for later that same year to further advance the lunar base initiative.

As excitement builds for this monumental mission, the world watches closely as NASA prepares to embark on a new era of lunar exploration.
